The Mercedes-Benz E-Sprinter
The Mercedes-Benz Vans range is expanding its line of electric vehicles with the launch of the new eSprinter Van, an all-electric version of the popular Sprinter Van. The eSprinter features a triad of efficiency, range and load capacity and two body styles and lengths. It also includes three battery sizes and a high payload as a base for numerous conversions and body variants. The new model is designed to be versatile and efficient, with a modular concept that allows maximum synergies in production. The new eSprinter is based on a new concept consisting of three modules;
- The front module, which includes all high-voltage components.
- The module for the integrated high-voltage battery, located in the underbody to save space.
- The rear module with the electrically driven rear axle.
Versatility
The new eSprinter has a multitude of technical innovations and is equipped with the largest battery available, which has a usable capacity of 113 kilowatt hours. The load capacity is 14 cubic metres, and the permissible gross vehicle weight is up to 4.25 tonnes. The electric range, based on a simulation using the WLTP cycle (Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure), will be up to 248 miles. The simulated range based on the WLTP city cycle will be up to 310 miles. These impressive ranges make the vehicle ideal for longer journeys!
The Electric Powertrain (eATS)
The eSprinter is equipped with the efficient motor and the innovative electric rear axle, both of which are being used for the first time in a battery-electric van from Mercedes-Benz. The permanent magnet synchronous motor (PSM), which weighs only around 130 kilograms, is characterised by particularly high efficiency and optimised thermal management. The motor is available in two power levels. With 100 or 150 kilowatts of peak output, this delivers a torque of up to 400 newton metres. The electrically driven rear axle makes cab chassis variants possible in addition to the classic panel van. For the customer, this brings advantages with regard to conversions and superstructures.
Customers can choose between three different batteries for the new Mercedes-Benz eSprinter. Depending on their individual range and payload requirements: a battery with a usable capacity of 56, 81 or 113 kilowatt hours. Lithium/iron phosphate (LFP) cell chemistry allows the battery variants to be kept free of cobalt and nickel, while active thermal management ensures maximum efficiency.
What Is The Range on the E-Sprinter
The range of the new Mercedes-Benz eSprinter depends on the battery option chosen by the customer. Here are the estimated ranges for each of the three available battery options, based on the WLTP test cycle:
- 56 kWh battery: up to 168 km (104 miles)
- 81 kWh battery: up to 221 km (137 miles)
- 113 kWh battery: up to 300 km (186 miles)
It's important to note that actual range may vary depending on a variety of factors, including driving style, weather conditions, and cargo load.
Impressive Infotainment
The new eSprinter offers impressive features in terms of digitisation and infotainment. It is equipped with the latest software generation of the Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX), which was previously only available in Mercedes-Benz passenger cars. This system includes a range of features and services that make everyday life with an electric vehicle easier for customers.
One of the highlights of the MBUX system is the "Electric Intelligence" navigation feature. This feature shows the current range in real-time, taking into account the current traffic situation and the topography of the route. It also calculates the best possible charging strategy to get to the destination as quickly as possible, or to have the desired state of charge (SoC) at the destination. This ensures that customers have the greatest possible planning certainty when driving their eSprinter. You can also use the MBUX system to authenticate yourself at the charging station, and payment can be made via Mercedes me, so simple!
