Local Heroes Awards 2022

Last Friday evening saw the return of the Local Heroes Awards hosted by Cornish radio station Pirate FM.
The Local Heroes Awards brings together local people in Cornwall to honour and celebrate not only their heroism, but their extraordinary courage, strong community spirit and desire to help others.
After more than two years of cancelations due to Coronavirus it was amazing to be back and be part of the 10th Local Heroes Awards, held at the beautiful Tregenna Castle Hotel in the Cornish hot-spot of St Ives.
A total of 14 Heroes collected awards on the night with each Hero representing a category, a way of recognising their heroism in different, unique and wonderful ways. The full list of categories included the Bravery Award, Carer of the Year, Young Person of the Year, Environmental Award, Emergency Services Award, Parent/Guardian of the Year, Fundraiser of the Year, Child of Courage, Cornish Coastal Rescue Award, Inspiration to Others, Sports Achievement Award, Good Neighbour Award, Lifetime Achievement Award and In Memory Of Award.
A carer from Bude who cared for an elderly lady for six years as she battled vascular dementia and Alzheimer’s was among the winners, along with a 21-year-old who beat cancer, a RNLI volunteer of 40 years, a young man who pulled an elderly lady from a burning building and a mum-of-three who has written and illustrated a sell-out book to help her and her children cope with domestic abuse.
Mercedes-Benz South West are proud to have sponsored the category Fundraiser of the Year, with winner Paul Turton recognised for his self-sacrifice and commitment.
Paul has been fundraising for 20+ years and has raised £86,000 (and counting) for local charities and good causes throughout the area.
Paul set up Helstonbury Music Festival in Helston which brings together great people and music to raise money for charity and local causes. Make sure you get your tickets for the THE “BIG 20” 22!
