A Taunton man teed up alongside golfers from more than 30 countries in the final of the world’s largest amateur championship in Germany last weekend.
James Macey, who has a handicap of 5, travelled to Stuttgart for the
MercedesTrophy World Final, where he helped Team UK to a seventh-place finish.
The MercedesTrophy, which was established in 1989, is open to Mercedes-Benz customers who are invited to participate by their local retailer. Each year more than 60,000 players tee up at regional qualifiers across the world, all aiming to secure their place at the World Finals in Germany.
Macey, 38, was in action alongside the two other UK golfers – Dean Peruzzi from Norwich and Patrick Aherne from Bexhill. Over three rounds, they secured a total of 180 stableford points, leaving them behind eventual winners, Team South Asia, who lifted the Nations Cup after registering 192.
Macey secured his place in Germany following victory at last year’s MercedesTrophy UK Final, when he beat amateur players from across the country. He had been invited to the tournament by Mercedes-Benz South West in Taunton.
As part of the trip, Macey visited the Mercedes-Benz Museum and attended a private Q&A with German golfer Bernhard Langer – two-time winner of the Masters and a Mercedes-Benz brand ambassador.
