The Evolution of the Mercedes-Benz E220d Cabriolet
First manufactured in 1993, the first generation of Mercedes-Benz E-Class offered a variety of models and designs which included: saloon, coupé, convertible and estate configurations. This class was a new introduction to the brand which had been manufacturing vehicles since 1953.
In 1995 the second generation of E-Class was released and a major facelift was brought in to attract younger buyers. This facelift included four large oval headlights as well as making the vehicle 1.6” longer and 2.3” wider which in turn offered a substantial amount more interior room, despite this it was still considered mid-size.
In 2002, the third generation of E-Class was released and as well as many aspect changes, Pre-Safe (without brake support) became standard.
In 2009, Mercedes-Benz launched the fourth generation of the E-Class, which underwent a major facelift in 2013. The E-Class received extensive design changes, fuel economy improvements, and updated safety features during this update.
In 2016, Mercedes-Benz released the fifth generation of the E-Class, which included further facelift upgrades and significant engine upgrades for certain vehicles. These upgrades involved transitioning from V6 engines to inline-6-cylinder engines. This switch brought about a new generation of four-cylinder diesel engines, as well as the continuation of existing four-cylinder petrol engines.
In 2023, the E-Class debuted its latest and sixth generation, representing its most recent release. Starting with this generation, Mercedes-Benz will no longer use the E-Class name for coupés, convertibles, and saloons. Instead, they will categorize both E-Class and C-Class coupés and convertibles under their own designation known as the CLE-Class.
